The 2015 Great NEWS posts share Healthy Habits to better support our happiness, health and harmony.  Today’s post is Part II of Maya Medicine insights learned since my first trip to Belize in February 2011. This information will provide a valuable foundation for our eco village, holistic health and wellness center. My goal today is to introduce the six proven principles of Maya medicine. When the eco community guest lodging is complete we will host visitors  ready to experience eco tours, organic food forests and permaculture gardens. We will share the benefits and wisdom of following Ayurvedic, Maya medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine and permaculture principles for manifesting the best health ever. This is the second post on Maya medicine discoveries in Belize.

Exotic Leaves

Belize has a unique combination of rainforests, reefs, rivers, ruins and rustic life.

This will be another short blog because I am preparing for another trip to Belize on December 8th for clearing brush and more permaculture planting during the rainy season. I will be meeting with Christopher Nesbitt a long term botanist, agroforestry and permaculture teacher managing a small NGO called Maya Mountain Research Farm. He has invested the last 30 years in Belize and 27 years farming on what was formerly degraded cattle and citrus land.

With the unique combination of rainforests, reefs, rivers, ruins and rustic life in Belize it will be valuable to access an expert like Christopher. To apply and master sustainability skills will require a great advisory team of people committed and connected to the earth, ecology and environment.

Maya Medicine Principles

These six principles of Maya medicine form the foundation for all Mayan bush doctors, healers and people.

  1. The “Life Force” is everywhere and permeates everything. The air, animals, foods, houses, mountains, people, plants, rivers and sea are said to be from a divine and spiritual source. Ch’uel binds everyone and everything together. It is a primary goal for the Mayan healer to help in balancing the flow of ch’ulel or “life force” in the body. Mayan healers believe that being happy, healthy and in harmony combined with praying directs ch’ulel to where it is most needed.
  2. The body, mind and soul are connected and all are linked to our state of disease or health. Each works in harmony and independently to determine our balance and energy level. When one area is out of balance all areas are affected.
  3. We must live with the natural cycles of the earth, moon, stars, sun and weather. We must also respect the veneration of plants
  4. Healing is the result of a comprehensive and integrative process involving everything around and within us. All things influence us and everything around us matters. We are the combination of all factors in our life.
  5. Bush of Hawthorne

The body, mind and soul are connected and all are linked to our state of disease or health.

The quality of our blood and cells are key factors determining our health. The state of our blood determines our health, longevity and vitality. When we are experiencing poor health we must seek ways to revitalize our blood and cells.

  6. Cold and hot properties around us have a major impact on all areas of our health and well being. We must be aware and tuned in to the properties of cold and hot with everything that has an influence on us.

These simple six principles provide the foundation for a person to maintain their happiness and health. When these principles are out of balance various Maya Medicine techniques can be used to help bring a person back in balance. All things including foods, herbal remedies, lifestyle, massage, mindset, nutrition and sweat lodge can play a key role in maintaining our state of happiness and health.

Mastery Action Plan (MAP)

For a simple book on the Mayan Foods as Medicine approach search for U Janal Aj Maya: Traditional Maya Cuisine by Aurora Saqui Garcia. Aurora runs a herbal center and Mayan medicine clinic in Maya Centre Village. Every time I stay at the Nuuk Cheil Cottages next to the clinic is another opportunity to discover more about Maya medicine. Aurora learned a lot about Mayan medicine and healing from her uncle Don Elijio Panti.
