75,000+ Toxic Chemicals

Our modern industrial world appears to be fixated on manufacturing tens of thousands of dangerous and toxic chemicals that are harming our health and polluting our world. Let’s look at some of the main problems with our current misguided approach to using dangerous and toxic chemicals in order to begin making better choices and finding safer solutions:

Body care, cosmetics and fragrances are a major source of synthetic chemicals that are frequently harmful and toxic. Most aftershaves, colognes, conditioners, deodorants, perfumes, shampoos, soaps and toothpastes contain harmful synthetic additives, cleansers, colorings, fragrances, lathering agents and preservatives.

These chemicals are harmful to your skin and easily absorbed into the body. Whatever you put on your body is almost the same as eating it since our skin is very porous and easily absorbs whatever chemicals are applied to it. Therefore only choose natural and safe products.

Fossil fuels such as coal, crude oil and natural gas are made from organic material that have accumulated and transformed in the earth after many centuries. They are basically massive accumulations of carbon. These materials are removed from the earth, processed and refined into butane, coal slurry, diesel, gasoline and propane which can be burned for fuel. Internal combustion engines and industrial uses break the products down into their elements which releases massive amount of heat as well as the harmful elements that make up the fuel.

The release of massive amounts of carbon is responsible for the shift in our atmosphere and global warming. Upgrade to a more energy efficient vehicle, car pool or use public transportation as soon as possible. Avoid needless driving, wasteful trips and inefficient fast starts and stops which wastes fuel. Consider adding solar panels and solar water heaters and reduce your home energy usage by upgrading to efficient appliances, insulation and windows.

Heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, tin and thallium are very harmful and toxic to lviing organisms. The list of health issues resulting from heavy metals would require books to adequately discuss. The key things to remember about heavy metals are how harmful they are to every area of your complex body including: bone, brain, blood, digestive, DNA, endocrine, enzyme, eye, hormones, immune, liver, lungs, mitochondria, nervous, renal, reproductive, skin and vascular systems.

Heavy metals are a serious risk to organisms higher up the food chain since over time more are consumed with foods and accumulate in the body. Radioactive heavy metal elements (actinides) like plutonium, thorium and uranium are very dangerous and toxic to all life. They have a long radioactive half life and when refined are much more concentrated and deadly. Avoid appliances, electronics, foods, household items and paints that contain heavy metals. Do your part to let the politicians know you are against nuclear plants and weapons so we can make this world a healthier and safer world.

Plastics are made from processing fossil fuels into a solid form. Many chemicals and processes are used to alter the characteristics and structure of the resulting polymers. Common plastics include polyethelene, polypropylene, polystrene, polystyrene, polytetrafluoroethylene and polyvinyl chloride.

Plastic Pollution

Plastic Ends Up in Landfills

The various chemical additives are a particular cause for concern. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an estrogen like endocrine disruptor. Plasticizers like adipates and phthalates have been found to be carcinogenic and harmful. Many additives are under investigation and some have been banned by countries. Plastics are very slow to breakdown and are therefore a massive cause of environmental pollution. litter and persistent refuge issue. They are a significant danger to the health and well being of many animals, birds, fish and humans. Avoid plastics whenever there is a safer alternative.

Synthetic cleaners and chemicals are used in most businesses, homes, industrial complexes, offices and public buildings. No matter where you go in the world there are an over abundance of cleaners and chemicals showing up in every area of our life. There are estimated to be over 75,000 chemicals in use around the world which are contaminating our bodies and environment.

Our appliances, cars, clothes, electronics, furniture, homes, house wares and personal effects are manufactured with large amounts of chemicals that constantly leach toxicity which is absorbed by our bodies. The air, food and water we need for health and survival are constantly exposed to large amounts of cleaners and chemicals. The majority of them are expensive and unnecessary. Choose natural products and consume less chemicals.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) consists of a wide range of carbon-based molecules that can accumulate in homes and offices which can harm your health.

They are used in a wide range of products for producing buildings, furnishings and homes. Common examples are formaldehyde in many adhesives and glues in furniture, particle board, plywood and wood veneers and polyurethane which is used in many coatings, foams, paints, sealants and varnishes. Benzene is a key industrial precursor and solvent for making industrial chemicals, drugs, dyes, plastics and synthetic rubber Chlorofluorocarbons are banned or highly regulated and were widely used in cleaning products and refrigerants. Tetrachloroethene is widely used in dry cleaning and industry. Styrene and limonene are additional VOC’s to be concerned with.

Fossil fuels also produce VOCs either directly as products or indirectly as exhaust. VOCs can cause acute and chronic health effects and some are known carcinogens.

Reducing Toxic Chemical Overload

With so many chemicals in our environment it may seem overwhelming as to where to begin. Start with small steps by educating yourself on the environmental impact, health consequences and long term risks and make conscious decisions.

Begin taking baby steps toward eliminating the worst offenders and minimizing the use of any toxic choices. Reduce the amount and number of cleaners and chemicals you buy and use on a regular basis. The more we reduce the abuse and use of chemicals the less exposure we and our family will face from these harmful synthetic chemicals. We will also reduce our carbon footprint and protect the environment.

Stop buying the most harmful chemicals and start buying the eco friendly brands. Stop using synthetic varieties when a natural choice exists. Avoid buying furniture and products which use large amounts of toxic chemicals, paint, synthetic fabrics and varnishes.

Wooden Clothes Pins

Choosing Natural Alternatives Over Man Made

Choose organic clothing and fabrics such as bamboo, cotton, hemp, linen, silk, and wool. Avoid the cheap plastics, gadgets, inefficient appliances/ electronics, micro waves and Teflon. Be sure to buy durable, energy efficient and long lasting appliances, ceramics, dishes, glassware, pans, pots, utensils. Use long lasting and natural materials in buildings, homes and offices built with energy efficient construction, design and function able to easily last at least 100 – 200 years. We must implement the seventh generation philosophy.

Setting an intention for an eco-friendly Earth Day, Every Day helps maintain the momentum for minimizing health risks and improving our long term well being. This week we learned about toxic chemicals responsible for harming our health and polluting our world. You now have numerous strategies and suggestions to stop using the harmful chemicals and start using natural alternatives.

A valuable mantra and motto to repeat regularly for better choices is: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle… Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

This will promote an Earth Day, Every Day mindset for better choices for you, our global community and future generations to come.
