The previous Great NEWS post covered how to Protect Against Free Radical Damage and today we warn readers by responding to the frequent question… “Is High Fructose Corn Syrup a Health Hazard?”  How many foods in the average home contain High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)?  You may be surprised to find at least thirty sources of HFCS in most homes.  Most people know that too much sugar is an obvious harmful health hazard.  This post will cover why HFCS may be even worse at harming our health and dig deeper into the question Is High Fructose Corn Syrup a Health Hazard?

Overweight Person

Many doctors, researchers and scientists have significant evidence that the more sugar and especially HFCS we consume the higher our risk for advanced: aging, cancer, disease, endocrine disruption, genetic issues, immune dysfunction, obesity, skin and tissue damage over time.

The Great NEWS Coach blog Health Hazards series is designed to alert us to health hazards that rob us of health. HFCS is accused of being a major contributor to: brain fog, cell disruption, diabetes, digestion issues, fat accumulation, food cravings, hormone disruption, immune disorders, inflammation, metabolism disruption, obesity, over eating and tissue damage. Many doctors, researchers and scientists have significant evidence that the more sugar and especially HFCS we consume the higher our risk for advanced: aging, cancer, disease, endocrine disruption, genetic issues, immune dysfunction, obesity, skin and tissue damage over time.

Common sense would suggest if there is significant concern we could play it safe and eliminate HFCS from our life.  Unfortunately many people have sedated their common sense with a sugar high and need more convincing.   Processed foods have excessive sugar added to tantalize the taste buds of adults and children.  It is also being added to compensate for the lack of taste when using low fat ingredients.

Most “sugar” in processed beverages and foods today comes from three main sources: corn, sugar beets and sugar cane.  Corn has high carbohydrate content and can be chemically altered, heated and processed to make super sweet corn syrup.  Most corn grown in the US is a Genetically Modified Organism (GMO). Sugar beets also have high carbohydrate content and can be heated and treated to product sugar.  Many sugar beets are Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). Cane sugar comes from the sugar cane plant and is highly bleached, extracted, heated and processed to make pure cane sugar.

While the sugar industry will tell you all of these sugars are natural since they come from plant sources this is very misleading.  GMO ingredients are not natural.  When farmers treat their crops with chemical fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides and pesticides they are no longer natural.  After bleaching, chemically treating, heating to high temperatures and removing all the natural fiber you no longer have a natural food.  For optimal health “natural” means an organic whole food including all of its plant fiber and phyto-nutrients in a minimally prepared and raw state.

Sugar and table salt are two ingredients used in abundance in most fake, fast and junk beverages and foods to make them be more addictive and taste better.  They also cause the body to crave water or any water rich drink in order to dilute and excrete the excess sugar and table salt from the body.  Excess salt and sugar cause many problems in our body and over time lead to significant disease and disruption of our health.

High Fructose Corn Syrup Is a Health Hazard

Syrup

While most people will not stop consuming sugars because they are so addictive and taste so good, we can at least stop consuming HFCS.

Consuming beverages and foods with HFCS is like ingesting a very dilute toxin.  This toxin is not deadly enough to kill you quickly but is harmful enough to contribute to a painful and slow death.  While most people will not stop consuming sugars because they are so addictive and taste so good, we can at least stop consuming HFCS.  This will be a great first step to start reducing our sugar intake and move us further along the path to happiness and health.  Most people are consuming way too much sugar and way too little nutrient dense whole foods which results in health issues.

HFCS is being identified as a major health hazard so keep reading to discover more of the dark side of this highly adulterated and processed sweetener.  To begin our study of sugar and develop a healthy foundation we need to study the basics.  Sugar comes in many basic and common forms including fructose, glucose and sucrose.  Carbohydrates we consume break down into sugars in our body and even dairy has a sugar called lactose.

Many people could feel confused about the generic term “sugar” because there are so many different names and varieties of sugar and sweeteners.  Plus it is a main ingredient in so many beverages and foods it is difficult to determine which forms may be acceptable in moderation and which ones are unacceptable and unhealthy.  It is easy to feel over whelmed and simply change the channel or turn off the TV (maybe this is a good thing to do).  Today we will learn simple solutions and suggestions to help eliminate HFCS from our life and replace the harmful sugars with healthy selections.

Rather than go off on tangents and address all the different sugars and sweeteners on the market our main focus today is to address all sweeteners derived from corn.  There are so many sweeteners in use it would take a book to discuss then all.  We will focus on products derived by processing, refining and treating corn to create products called: corn sweetener, corn syrup, glucose-fructose, glucose-fructose syrup, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) and Isoglucose.

Remember companies want to sell their consumable product regardless of the complications and consequences to your happiness and health.  Only you can stand guard to prevent harmful products and toxins from entering your body and wrecking havoc.  This requires you to do a little homework and research so it is easier to make informed choices and decisions.  If we drop our defensive shields we open our self up to sugar sabotaging our health and well being.

Today we will discover the basic reasons why too much sugar and especially HFCS will ruin our health and wreck our future.  When we understand how to minimize our unhealthy sugar intake we reduce a key health hazard and maximize our ability for peak performance.  Our goal today is to learn how to stop sugar and especially HFCS from wrecking our health and start supporting our head and heart with nutrient dense organic whole foods instead.

While our body does need carbohydrates (sugars), fats and proteins for our maintenance, materials and metabolism we must choose the best sources of each for optimal health and peak performance.    Unfortunately most people are consuming an over abundance of highly refined harmful beverages and fake foods, fast foods and junk foods manufactured with excessive sugars, table salt and artificial sweeteners.  When we consume things manufactured with additives, chemicals, flavorings and sugars that contain highly heat, processed and refined ingredients stripped of the fiber, minerals, nutrients and vitamins we damage our bodies and cells. These unnatural frankenfoods create free radicals, deprive our body and rob our health and vitality.  This results in a train wreck damaging our cells, glands and organs which result in damage and eventually destruction.

Avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup

Excessive Weight

Unfortunately most people are consuming too many refined sugars which over loads and over works the body converting the excess sugars to fat.

Our cells require a constant supply of macro and micro nutrients, oxygen, water and waste removal to survive and thrive.  Basic sugars feed the mitochondria in our cells which allow us to produce energy.  We can access these sugars from carbohydrates or fats which the body converts, processes and stores as needed.   Unfortunately most people are consuming too many refined sugars which over loads and over works the body converting the excess sugars to fat. As a result there are many dangerous and harmful side effects as the body deals with giant tankers of high octane jet fuel when all it really needs is a small supply of charcoal briquettes to fuel the grill.

The excess consumption of highly processed and refined sugars begins to attack, burn out and destroy our cardiovascular system, digestion, endocrine system, hormones, immune function, metabolism, nervous system and organs.  HFCS is one of the worst due to the GMO ingredients, pollutions and toxins that are included in the jet fuel as additives.  Burning jet fuel in your car will ultimately destroy even the best engine in the world.

To understand why HFCS is so harmful we must first look at the GMO corn that is used to produce it.  Besides being very detrimental to the ecosystem and environment due to the artificial chemicals, fertilizers, fossil fuels, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and pesticides used it is also very destructive to the biodiversity and maintenance of the top soil we all depend on for food and health.  Small farmers are replaced my mega agriculture and biotechnology commercial conglomerations.  The crop is a commercial commodity grown for profit regardless of how destructive, harmful and unnatural it is to animals, humans and plants that are affected and altered because of them.

GMO corn is processed by extensive fermentation, heating and treating with complex procedures until is has a chemical purity and stability for long shelf life.  Them it can be used in further chemical processing and refining into artificial fake beverages and foods.

GMO corn is highly subsidized major crop in the US so it has become a cheap source for sugar in beverages and foods.  HFCS is used in a wide variety of highly processed and refined beverages and food products.

HFCS is very acidic and can impact blood vessels, cells and tissues to be dehydrated which can restrict blood flow.  HFCS can be very disruptive on the endocrine glands and especially the pancreas which must produce insulin to regulate blood sugar levels.   Excess sugar can cause us to over eat due to the over stimulation of the taste buds and blocking the receptors that tell us to stop eating.  Digestion can become impaired due to the highly processed and refined foods low in fiber.

Our colon and intestines can become problematic and sluggish or stop working well. Our nervous system may become more prone to problems from the inflammation and over stimulation caused by HFCS.   Excess acidity caused by HFCS can cause cells and tissue to atrophy and break down or mutate into an abnormal growth or tumor.  It is well known that cancer cells grow best in an acidic, low oxygen environment while feeding on sugar from the blood.     Our immune system may attack our own cells causing autoimmune disease.

Sugar on Spoon

Excess carbohydrate (sugar) consumption can lead to behavioral issues, circulation problems, diabetes, eye issues, high blood sugar, inflammation, irritable bowel, kidney problems, mood swings, nerve damage, obesity and weight gain.

Excess carbohydrate (sugar) consumption can lead to behavioral issues, circulation problems, diabetes, eye issues, high blood sugar, inflammation, irritable bowel, kidney problems, mood swings, nerve damage, obesity and weight gain.  Initially we may experience more bouts of infections and sickness.  Over time our body will suffer more and more frequent health complications and issues that have greater side effects and take longer to heal and recover.  What starts as a slight annoyance and irritation can over time balloon into a vicious life threatening attack.  Accelerated aging, autoimmune issues and  advanced insulin resistance cause massive damage until we finally submit to a fatal and terminal disease and die.  This is because excess sugar and especially HFCS weakened our defenses and wreck havoc on our body.

Stop Eating Processed and Refined Sugar

The best way to avoid HFCS is to avoid:

  • Baked bagels, breads, breakfast bars, cakes, chips, cookies, crackers, cup cakes, granola bars, pastries, protein bars,
  • Big brand commercial baby food and formula that are not labeled organic.
  • Coffee concoctions presweetened, energy drinks, fruit drinks, juices, sodas, sports drinks and all sugary drinks,
  • Candy and chocolate listing anything from corn processing.
  • Cereal and even oatmeal that is presweetened.
  • Condiments like BBQ sauce, dips, flavoring sauces, jams, jelly, ketchup, marinades, salad dressings, sauces,
  • Deserts like brownies, cakes, frozen yogurt, ice cream, pies, popsicles, sherbet,
  • Energy, meal replacement and snack bars,
  • lunch meats and sausage often have HFCS,
  • Most processed and refined drinks and fake, fast and junk foods.
  • Pizza sauce, soups and spaghetti sauce,
  • Cheese dips, chocolate milk, dairy, macaroni and cheese  and yogurts with fruit added

Note: the exceptions may be from some foods in some countries that primarily avoid HFCS and use real cane sugar.
