Kids on GrassIn previous blogs we mentioned ways to protect your body and brain by avoiding toxic chemicals like fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and persticides used on our green spaces, landscaping, potted plants and yards. Unfortunately many people are using lots of toxic chemicals without even reading the ingredients and warning labels. The first think to realize is that almost all lawn chemicals, fertilizers and products contain toxic chemicals. Putting these on your lawns and plants exposes you and your family to  serious health hazards on a regular basis. Since most people are not aware of the toxic ingredients when they are on the lawn the family walks barefoot or with shoes and tracks them into the house. This blog post is designed to help you realize that most products for house and yard plants are toxic to the kids, parents and pets. Common sense dictates that we must learn more about the chemicals used on household plants, landscapes and lawns to insure our health and safety.

The previous two blog post and others have addressed the importance of basic common sense strategies and suggestions that will help protect your body, brain and organs against excessive damage and degradation from health hazards like lawn care products. This post will offer helpful information that can better support your current health and well being if you have a yard or community green space near by. Many people are harming their current and future health due to a lack of awarenss and caution regarding the chcmicals and products applied to lawns and plants.

Learn Natural Landscaping and Lawncare

Grass with DewRemember: we are what we breathe, drink, eat, think and touch. We must learn the ingredietns in products for our house and yard to know how to protect our self from poisons and toxic exposure.  Avoid products like:

  • Herbicides such as Roundup with glyphosate which has been identified as a carcinogenic compound.
  • Weed and feed fertilizer.
  • Chemical fertilizer that is made with petroleum products. Buy one that is made with natural and organic material.
  • Stop using lawn care companies that apply toxic chemicals. Learn about growing organic grass and plants in your yard.
  • Remove the toxic chemicals, commercial cleaners and compounds in your garage, house and yard and take them to a toxic waste facility.
  • Stop systemic poisons and treatments.
  • Avoid using treated lumber which contains arsenic and other toxic compounds.
  • Golf courses can be very hazardous to your health. See this story about a golfer who appears to have died from toxic products used.

Remember kids like to go barefoot in the grass so being extra diligent with our green space and yards is vital for their well being. Thanks to the power of information resources and the internet we are able to educate and inform ourselves with a wealth of information on the health hazards used for lawn and plant care to make better choices. While it can take an investment of time to read, research and review resources to become better educated on environmentally friendly landscaping and yard products most of the hard work has been done for us.

7 Simple Strategies for Super Scenery

EarthwormsNow that you are more aware of the risks from chemicals and lawn care products it is time to learn about maintaining and sustaining your green sapce and yard naturally. Research your climate, environment and zone to determine what plants are naturally pest, water and weather tolerant. There are specific things we can do to help nourish, protect and support our grass and plants to stay healthy and resistant to disease. First we must replace the many products containing synthetic chemicals and compounds with the healthier ones that are found in nature. We can find companion plants, essential oils and disease and pest resistant plants that will do well. Avoid the temptation to create that picture perfect yard for the yard of the month sign which can require chemical fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and pesticides to achieve. Try these instead:

  • Essential oils from herbs and plants can be great for protecting plants: basil, clove, garlic, lemongrass, lime, marigolds, neem, orange, onions, oregano, rosemary, thyme and turmeric. There are also natural ways to treat fire ants and termites to avoid toxic chemicals.
  • Apply calcium bentonite clay, diatamaceous earth, minerals, phytonutrients, rock dust and trace elements to help provide all the basics needs for optimal plant growth and help prevent pest problems. Strong plants can better resist disease and pests compared to weak ones.
  • Feed your plants with beneficial compost tea and Effective Micro0rganisms (EM) to enhance the plants and soil easily and efficiently. Look for more information on these in another blog in the future.
  • Properly watering grass and plants is important to maintain  healthy landscaping and yard.
  • There are many landscaping plants that look great and help build the soil. Look into nitrogen fixing legumes and trees.
  • Earthworms are a sign of good soil and yard ecology. Avoid chemicals that kill earth worms.
  • Find plants that produce flowers and food to feed the bees, birds, butterflies, ladybugs and lizards.
