Knee Pain or Pain-Free

Did you know that knee pain can be our friend? Pain can be a signal to get our attention.  Pain is part of a complex system of neurofeedback about our body to prevent damage and protect us from injury. The goal is to learn the leading causes of knee pain in order to stop doing those things and start doing things to help our knee be pain-free.

As mentioned in previous blog posts, most pain is the result of health hazards, excess stress, and unhealthy habits.  Knee pain does not come from a lack of medication, surgery, and treatments. Most knee pain comes from choices about our fitness, footwear, lifestyle, and nutrition. Here are some of the leading causes of knee pain and persistent problems.

Alignment and body posture are major contributors to knee pain. Sitting and standing without good posture often leads to knee pain.

Footwear is a major contributor to knee pain. Non-ergonomic footwear often leads to knee issues.  Shoes based on fads and fashions can lead to many feet, ankle, knee, hip and back problems. Many heels, soles, and treads torque the knee. Shoes that are improperly designed or sized for our feet often create foot issues that can lead to knee issues.

Lack of exercise and too much sitting leads to weak joints and muscles which will likely lead to knee pain. Exercise equipment and sports can cause many of our knee problems so choose wisely how you play and train.

Improper foot alignment, stride, and strike can lead to knee problems. Many people walk in ways that excessively stress their knees.

Not walking barefoot daily can lead to knee problems.  Our feet are designed for a wide variety of movements and positions but rarely get the full range of motion they are designed for. Most shoes create an unnatural foot angle and force to the knee.

Poor nutrition can result in knee pain. Excess acidity and weight often result in significant knee pain.

Running, standing and walking improperly can lead to knee problems. Hard heel striking is hard on our knees.

Wearing stylish shoes instead of functional shoes often causes us to become dysfunctional and weak, starting a chain reaction affecting our knees and hips.

Knee Pain to Pain-Free Fast

To reverse and stop debilitating knee pain we must stop things that cause that pain and start doing things to prevent and resolve it.  The most significant causes of chronic knee pain are lack of maintenance, poor nutrition and proper conditioning for our feet, knees, and hips. We must learn activities that align, balance, build, maintain and train our body to be more flexible and fluid and less rigid.

Avoid lifestyle choices that can lead to diabetes, gout, heart disease, high blood pressure, and inflammation which correlate to a decline in physical mobility and walking. Learn how to protect your body and stems cells from early degeneration.

Buy ergonomic shoes that are well designed like Birkenstock. Avoid heels, pointed and tight shoes.  Consider good insoles and orthotics to properly support your feet. ALine produces quality insoles. Walk at least a mile a day in an ergonomic shoe in a mindful state.

Exercise is essential to maintain our health and be pain-free. Focus on a full range of motion and proper form when training to build stable and strong bones, cartilage, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.   Condition the body, brain and nervous system to build and maintain: agility, alignment, balance, coordination, flexibility, mobility, power, stamina, strength, and tone. Proper jumps, lunges, squats and strength training helps build strong bones and knees. Bear crawls and crab crawls are also good exercises.  Sit less and stand more. Walk barefoot more often.

Prevent diabetes and obesity which contribute to knee pain and suffering. They put lots of strain and stress on the entire body which impacts the feet, knees, hips, and back. Give your body what it needs to maintain and repair itself.  Consume fresh, nutrient-dense, organic whole foods in a rainbow of colors to help maintain your body for optimal health. Proper nutrition helps to prevent pain and problems.

Proper foot and knee alignment and posture prevents future pain and problems.  Avoid falls and injuries which account for much of our knee pain.  Walk barefoot in wet sand and observe your footprints. Be videoed from behind while standing and walking in different shoes.

Seek coaching, diagnostic help and physical therapy from highly skilled functional therapists like Egoscue, Monkeybar Gym, and MovNat. Brian Bradley and Pete Egoscue offer great books, videos, and tips at Egoscue. A proper regular yoga practice can help prevent knee pain.

Update and upgrade your health habits, lifestyle and thinking to be free of knee pain.  Surround yourself with great resources and role models. Consider anti-aging, longevity and stem cell therapies.
